New Zealand Gold Medal for International Shows

It was with great pleasure that National Daffodil Society of New Zealand (NDSNZ) President, Lesley Ramsay, presented the first NDSNZ Gold Medal to Kirby Fong for his winning exhibit of five New Zealand raised varieties at the 2010 American Daffodil Society (ADS) Convention held at Ironstone Vineyards in Murphys, California. Kirby's collection was comprised of daffodils from five different Kiwi raisers. Kirby has been a long time friend of New Zealand so it was a fitting acknowledgement of his interest in, and support of, New Zealand raised varieties.

The Medal was struck this year on behalf of the members of the National Daffodil Society of NZ.  It was a long overdue acknowledgement of the very generous trophies donated by members of the ADS to the NDSNZ many years ago. The medal will be awarded annually to the winner of the New Zealand class at future ADS Conventions. Spud Brogden will continue to support this class with bulb prizes making the overall award well worth winning!

The NDSNZ Medal has also been awarded to the winner of the NZ Raised class at The Daffodil Society of Great Britain Show at Warwick and will also be an annual award. The winners keep the medal.

The medal features the cyclamineus hybrid ‘Trena’ which was raised by the late Mavis Verry, and is a New Zealand cultivar with international success on the show bench. Mavis would have been very proud to have one of her famous triplets featured in this way.
